For the Sake of Open Space
The Town of Cave Creek is engaged in a monumental effort to preserve pristine Sonoran Desert lands north of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
By annexing over 6,000 acres of State Trust Land into the Town, Cave Creek negotiated a plan to preserve over 4,000 acres as permanent open space which will be used for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing and as a buffer against rapid urban expansion. This land must be purchased from the State Land Department. To raise the funds necessary for this critical preservation effort, the Town is hosting a number of special events to showcase the lands being protected, generate public interest and raise money for acquisition.
2nd Annual Cave Creek Bicycle Festival
A special thanks to Mark and Marilyn Nadeau and the law firm of DLA Piper for providing major sponsorship of this year's Cave Creek Bicycle Festival.
Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from last year, we will again feature a Mountain Bike Race route through the spectacular Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area and Cave Creek Regional Park on Saturday November 13th. Start time is 9:00am SHARP!
Later in the afternoon it's time to get the kids on their bikes for a race around a loop course. This will be the inaugural year for the "Kids Kriterium". We will close the Hidden Valley Drive loop in the historic Tamarisk Grove District for kids-only race for age and gender awards and the chance to win a cool BMX bike. Kids from 6 to 14 are encouraged to try their hand at racing with whatever bike they love to ride. (Helmets are mandatory and all bikes will undergo a safety check before the race begins.) A parent must be present during the entire race. See additional information on the Kids Kriterium page.
Also new this year is an "Alley Cat Race". Similar to messenger race in New York or San Francisco. Riders will be given clues to locations where they will have a passport stamped. The first rider back to the start wins bragging rights and a yet-to-be-determined prize. The Alley Cat Race is open to all registrants (Mountain Bike and Discovery Road Ride) and will take place Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm.
The Buffalo Chip Saloon and Restaurant will once again host the Ride-in Bicycle Theater in the evening on Saturday.
Sunday, November 15th the road riders will take the stage for the Discovery Road Ride. This year we will again offer a 35-ish and 50-ish mile fun ride. The route this year will be a bit different than last year but it will still be a beautiful ride through pristine Sonoran Desert on rural roads.
